Table 3 Comparison of the 5 subpopulations. The label of the subpopulation is derived from the diabetes status of the patients in the three time periods: 2000–2001, 2002–2003, and 2004. For example, ‘pnn’ patients were pre-diabetic in 2000–2001, normal in 2002–2003 and normal in 2004; ‘npn’ patients were normal in 2000–2001, prediabetic in 2002–2003 and normal in 2004. The other subpopulation labels can be interpreted analogously
